Kuala Lumpur: An Introduction

Kuala Lumpur is quite a large city when including all the neighbouring townships. The city is the home to a multitude of tongues, religions and customs and has a very colourful past. The main communities are the Malays, the Chinese and the Indians, while there are also several lesser known communities.

The city was not built until 1857 when a few hundred miners set up camp here looking for the precious metal tin. They named the place Kuala Lumpur which means, muddy estuary. By the 1860s Kuala Lumpur began to flourish and the Jamek Mosque which was built in 1908, overlooks the place where it all began for this great city.

In 1957 Malaysia got its independence from British rule, and later in 1974, Kuala Lumpur become detached from the mother state of Selangor and was further granted more independence and called the Federal Territory.
